Mental Health & Anti-Ligature

PR1 Classic Locksets – Primary override

Undoubtedly, the single most important feature of all Primera locksets and the one that sets their products apart from other solutions is the unique way that the Primary Barricade Override mechanism works. Primera does not utilise the cylinder to provide the barricade override mechanism. This patented feature of the system is far more sophisticated and is integrated into the lockcase itself.

Because the lock is driven by an ordinary euro cylinder the client is not limited to the small number of suppliers who produce a clutch/geared cylinder and therefore has a much broader selection of locking cylinders to choose from including our high specification range of ASSA and Abloy cylinder systems. In many cases, products can also be integrated into an existing master keyed system. The integral Primary Barricade facility is unique. There are a few different ways that other manufacturers suggest that they can deal with ‘held-from-inside’ barricade issues, but these other options utilise either a clutch or geared cylinder mechanism, both of which have serious shortcomings. No slipping clutches, no geared cylinders and therefore none of the risks associated, just a 100% assurance that the key will unlock the door whenever it is required to do so.

Life-Line Locksets – Primary override with closed keyway

Life-Line is a new closed keyway system less prone to the possibilities of the service user jamming foreign objects inside the mechanism to prevent clinical staff access. The patent pending Life-Line mechanism is an unconventional, semi-secure, locking system equipped with five spring loaded, forward facing locking pins. These locking pins close off access to the keyway when the key is not in use. This reduces the potential for service users to jam foreign objects inside the keyway in order to prevent clinical staff access. The Life-Line mechanism is operated by a special key which, for simplicity and speed is common to all Primera products available on the Life-Line platform.

The ‘bit’ of the Life-Line key has four specially designed spigots which incorporate under-cuts. These spigots align with the Life-Line mechanism to force backwards the spring loaded locking pins to operate the lock. The system is designed as such that each pin must be simultaneously forced back into the mechanism to a specific point to allow the key to rotate. When the key is removed the keyway is automatically closed off again making the mechanism less prone to the insertion of foreign objects.

PR3S Twin-Tech Locksets – Secondary override

Twin-Tech locksets offer a unique and patented safety feature in the emergency override lock-case. Unlike others, this feature is not cylinder dependent and it ensures that the key will dominate whatever the service user might do on the inside of the door to prevent staff gaining access to their room. We call this ‘Primary Barricade Override’.

We understand the potential that exists for a patient to undertake a more determined barricade attempt by deliberately blocking the key-way with foreign objects such as chewing gum or paper. To this end, Primera introduced the ‘Secondary Barricade Override’ system. For clarity, Secondary Barricade Override includes all the features of Primary Barricade Override. Secondary Override also includes a concealed and additional back-up mechanism which provides clinical staff with a means to unlock and open a door even when the key doesn’t work!

Now there is something even better. Twin-Tech comes complete with all the inherent safety features of its predecessors but in a much more stylish and intuitive package. This product has been purposefully designed to add flair to the range yet is easier to install, stronger by design and, despite all this, comes as a non-handed, universal package to suit any door. Twin-Tech can be supplied with any of the Primera pull handles, the Pinch Grip, Elephants Trunk or Grab Handle according to specific needs of the ward.

PassPort Access Control Locksets

Primera PassPort has been specifically developed in response to the growing demand from the mental healthcare sector for a robust, electro-mechanical, anti-ligature access control door lock. Designed principally to empower the service user with full control over his/her bedroom door, the unit operates without need of ordinary mechanical keys utilising either proximity card or fob which can be supplied in a variety of different, user friendly formats.

The system is completely standalone in that it utilises four ordinary AA alkaline batteries for its power source eliminating the expense, complexity and risk of routing hard wiring in such potentially challenging applications. Primera PassPort is a door mounted device hence there is no requirement for armoured door loops between the door & frame further minimising any potential for ligature points.

Operating on the Mifare platform, the system is designed to accept any proximity key operating on the ISO/IEC 14443 encryption standard which enables easy integration with most other existing Mifare based access systems.

Every design detail of this unique innovation has been made with careful consideration to the environment in which it is to be used and with particular regard to the fact that some level of product abuse is highly probable. To this end the main body is constructed from a solid alloy block, the RFID window machined from 5mm polycarbonate and the access plate laser cut from 3mm solid steel plate making the unit extremely robust and resilient to physical attack. The product is of course intended to be very firmly secured to the door with no less than six bolt-through M5 anti-tamper torx pin fixings preventing any possibility of unauthorised removal and any probability of it ever being used as a weapon against clinical staff. With chamfered edges on all sides the product is designed to conform in every respect to TS001, the only recognised technical specification for anti-ligature hardware fittings published by the Door & Hardware Federation. At the highest level (level 4) TS001 dictates that it must not be possible to attach a ligature to the device in any direction (down, up, left, right and perpendicular to the door) using a 0.5mm wire.

Unlike most other access control products the electronic control equipment for Primera PassPort is housed on the outside of the door which significantly reduces the potential for patients to tamper with the device without clinical staff noticing. Furthermore, PassPort comes fully equipped with a concealed secondary barricade override mechanism enabling clinical staff access in the event of attempted barricade, batteries becoming fully exhausted or in the unlikely event of an electronic failure. This dispenses with the usual requirement for, and expense of locking cylinders which require mechanical keys, are prone to wear and are often the target of patient abuse.

The proportions of the Primera PassPort are deliberately larger than normal in order to incorporate essential safety features not normally available in conventional access control products. This makes it particularly suitable for retro-fit applications where it is necessary to ensure adequate cover of any previous door preparation.

Pinch Grip Handle

The pinch grip handle is a recognised design icon in the mental healthcare sector. Stylish and elegant lines make this a favourite with interior designers in their efforts to de-institutionalise the mental health environment. This tried and tested design has been the mainstay of the range since its inception though is better suited to applications where manual dexterity is not a major consideration (elderly/infirm). The pinch grip handle is purpose designed and has been tested to DHF TS001 passing at the highest level (Grade 4). Supplied in either radius or square format, back-plates are manufactured from 3mm electroplated steel with 30 degree chamfered edges and supplied singularly complete with Torx-Pin anti-tamper fixings.

Elephants Trunk Handle

Designed specifically for applications where manual dexterity is of primary concern, the Elephants Trunk provides the perfect anti-ligature handle solution. This robust and solid cast product is of sleek design and offers a stylish alternative to the more commonly known ‘Witches Nose’ handle. It has been cleverly designed to work on 2 different back-plates, the first being a flat plate suitable for either new doors or retro-fit applications and designed for a simple surface mount fixing. The second option provides for the handle to be mounted on a recessed dish which further increases the amount of available space behind the handle for the bigger hand but requires more detailed door preparation prior to installation.
Despite the high demand for this type of handle the elephants trunk handles cannot conform to DHF TS001 due to the very nature of their design. These handles are better suited to applications where there is less challenging behaviour unless installed with back to back bolt through fixings which the product has been designed to accommodate.

Grab Handle

With increased grip and designed to conform to DHF TS001 the grab handle is our best all round anti-ligature handle catering for all applications. The inside of the handle has been carefully sculptured to provide the same form and function as a round bar handle yet with excellent styling and reduced potential for injury due to low projection and smooth line curvature. Like the Elephants Trunk, the Recessed Grab has also been designed to work on 2 different back-plates, the first being a flat plate suitable for either new doors or retro-fit applications and designed for a simple surface mount fixing. The second option provides for the handle to be mounted on a recessed dish which further increases the amount of available space behind the handle for the bigger knuckle but requires more detailed door preparation prior to installation. Both handle options have been designed to conform to DHF TS001. Supplied complete with Torx-Pin security fixings.

Recessed Handle

The smaller of the pull handle family at just 90mm x 106mm and fabricated from 3mm solid steel. This is an ideal recessed handle solution for cupboards, drawers, MH sports hall doors and very often specified for conventional doors in units with more challenging behaviour due to the lack of any protrusions. Conforming to the requirements of TS001 at the level 4 the recessed handle provides a practical solution to many applications. Supplied complete with Torx-Pin anti-tamper fixing screws.

Narrow Style Handle

Some applications, typically feature panelled doors or where there is a larger than normal viewing panel, call for a narrower back-plate than normal. The narrow style handle offers an alternative solution with a single side flange to avoid finger contact with the door frame. Mounted on a 200 x 25 x 3mm back-plate with 30 degree chamfered edges and radius corners. Supplied complete with Torx-Pin anti-tamper fixing screws.

CLIK Load Release

CLIK is a new range of load release items that offers a wide selection of fixtures and fittings for use in mental health environments, all of which are manufactured in the UK.

When an abnormal load is applied (10kg per bracket, 20kg max) the holding force is immediately overcome and the bracket releases its load. This could be a curtain track, soap dish, wardrobe rail or any one of a number of anti-ligature load release products designed for use in mental healthcare. CLIK can do this time after time without any adverse effect on the performance of the product.

For durability and consistency CLIK incorporates heat treated stainless steel spring clips that have no decline in performance over time. After release all that is required is for the item to be pushed back into its bracket and the product is ready for use again.

Laboratory tested & fully accredited – Primera prides itself on the design and manufacture of products that are, above all, fit for purpose. To this end all CLIK products are independently tested by Exova, a UKAS accredited test laboratory, to the Door and Hardware Federation’s technical specification for anti-ligature products; DHF TS001. Load release products require two different tests, referred to as B and C. One to measure ligature resistance, the other determining the load at which the product release. All CLIK products passed both at the highest level, Level 4.

ABS Plastic: strong, durable & incredibly safe – Unlike polycarbonate, which can break and tear leaving jagged edges which can be used for self-harm, all CLIK products are manufactured from high performance ABS plastic which has been selected for strength, durability and its inherent properties which reduce the potential for self-harm.

Fire resistant – During the injection moulding process a fire retardant is added to achieve a VO fire rating (burning stops within 10 seconds).

Light weight – Unlike other load release products, all the components in the CLIK range have been purposefully designed to be as light as possible. This reduces the risk to clinical staff. When compared, CLIK products weighed in at significantly less than other leading brands.

The CLIK range includes toilet roll holders, towel rails, towel rings, soap dishes, shelves, Wardrobe rails, coat hooks, shower track and curtain track.

DUALWAY Anti-Barricade Door System

The DUALWAY Anti-Barricade Door System is a purpose made door solution designed specifically to address the needs of today’s challenging mental health and custodial environments, where the risk of ligature or self-harm are prevalent. The system provides unrestricted and immediate access into a room in a situation where a patient has barricaded himself or herself in.

• Unique Anti-Barricade two way Door System
• Reduced ligature hinges and hardware
• Outer frame dual hook bolt locking with emergency key release
• Electronic inner frame locking options
• Rebated inner frame in robust preformed steel section
• Suitable for standard high security door locks and hardware

Design and Application – Suitable for either new build or for retrofit applications where individual doorsets are required within an existing facility. The system utilises a frame within a frame principal, allowing for a standard 44mm or 54mm door to be mounted within a secondary high security steel inner frame.

Principals and Operation – In everyday use the standard inward opening door operates in a normal way, providing 105 to 115 degree access using a purpose designed full height Anti-ligature continuous hinge. The inner preformed steel frame provides rigid support and security by means of heavy duty purpose designed mechanical hook bolt locking, or with the option of an electrically operated locking system.

Barricade Release – In an emergency or barricaded door situation the door and inner frame can be quickly released enabling the complete doorset to swing outwards allowing immediate access into the room. Access is achieved by releasing the dual hook locks mortised into the outer frame and operated by unique security profile keys, or an electrically operated release mechanism.

Doorset and Frame Options – The Anti-barricade system has been designed to suit the majority of standard 44mm and 54mm doorsets, including both FD30S and FD60S options where required. The system is adaptable to accommodate alternative door thicknesses subject to special order. The steel inner frame can be supplied in a range of standard finishes or with the choice of special options to suit specific requirements.

Anti-Ligature Features – The DUALWAY system incorporates unique interleaf continuous hinges, which feature anti-ligature end tips and provide a minimal gap between the door and the frame. The full height continuous hinges provide even load distribution and substantially increased strength over pivoted doorsets, eliminating the potential for splitting under impact or during abuse.
